Michael Schmidt, who lived from 1945 until 2014, is one of the most important photographers of post-war German photography, along with Bernd and Hilla Becher.
He is represented with his works in national and international collections and has presented his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions. In 1996, Michael Schmidt presented his project “U-NI-TY” in a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
With his book and exhibition projects such as “CEASEFIRE” (1987), “U-NI-TY” (1996), “WOMEN” (2000) and “FOODSTUFF” (2012), among others, Michael Schmidt has written photography history. In 2014 he received the prestigious Prix Pictet.
